2027 Global Sustainable Development Report

Priority Issues for Strengthening SDG Implementation

1. Gaps in Lead‑Safe Practices and Health Equity

Many countries lack consistent implementation of lead‑safe renovation and housing standards, resulting in preventable exposure among children, pregnant people, and low‑income communities. Strengthening regulatory alignment and enforcement is essential to advance SDG 3 (Health), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities).

2. Insufficient Education, Training, and Public Awareness

Limited access to certified training, multilingual materials, and culturally responsive outreach prevents communities and workers from understanding risks and applying lead‑safe protocols. Expanding environmental‑health education and standardized training supports SDG progress by empowering households, workers, and local governments.

3. Weak Surveillance, Data Integration, and Accountability

Fragmented data systems and inconsistent reporting hinder early detection of hazards and slow coordinated action. Integrated health‑housing‑environment data systems, transparent complaint processes, and community‑centered monitoring are critical for evidence‑based policy and equitable SDG implementation.

Summary

CEE’s work demonstrates how integrated approaches—combining science, policy guidance, and community education—can reduce lead exposure and strengthen SDG implementation. By aligning regulations, expanding lead‑safe training, and improving surveillance systems, countries can accelerate progress toward healthier, more equitable, and more resilient communities. These priorities reflect global scientific evidence and support the 2027 GSDR’s goal of strengthening the science‑policy‑society interface.
